The MapInfo Professional Training course defines the concept of a Geographic Information System (GIS) and provides you with an understanding of basic MapInfo functionality that will enable you to create maps and analyze your data in a spatial context.

After completion of this course you'll be able to:

  • Use the Hotlink tool

  • Open and display MapInfo tables

  • Understand the structure of a MapInfo table and the concepts of layering

  • Perform querying and geographic searches within MapInfo

  • Manipulate the appearance of a map window

  • Create and modify Graphs within MapInfo

  • Produce professional presentations using the layout window and also by exporting your maps

  • Create new and maintain existing tables

  • Open files in different database formats within MapInfo

Topics Covered

  • Lesson 1. Getting Started
    Open and display MapInfo tables in Map, Browse, Graph and Layout windows. Save your work to a workspace.

  • Lesson 2. Moving around Maps
    Open an existing workspace. Alter the map window by using the Zoom, Change View and Grabber tools. Learn how to Zoom Layer a map window and get "Info" from your map window.

  • Lesson 3. Manipulating the Appearance of a Map
    Add and remove map layers. Alter the display of your map window using Style Override. Create a cartographic legend and label your map objects.

  • Lesson 4. Finding and Selecting Objects
    Use the Query > Find command to locate specific map objects. Explore the Select tools and create a graph from a selection.

  • Lesson 5. Preparing for Printing and Exporting Presentations
    Set your printer options and manipulate the Layout window. Create a Scalebar to make your map more meaningful. Add symbols and text to the Layout window and save this to a workspace. Export your presentation to a report.

  • Lesson 6. Table Maintenance
    Open a file in a different database format in MapInfo. Create a new table, determining table structure, data and the location of map objects. "Hotlink" your map objects to access URLs and associated files.

Prerequisites

Familiarity with the Windows 98 interface and operating system. Knowledge in ArcInfo or ArcView will be advantageous.
